Reed, I attended your class on Thursday, July 3 and took (and passed) my First Class C test.  However, I was just perusing the MN D of L&I website and noticed conflicting information.  According to state statute 183.51, my First Class C license allows me to be the take charge person for a plant of up to 300 HP.  But when I clicked on the boiler license classification link on the D of L&I web page, the PDF chart of license information says that first class C can take charge of a plant up to 500 HP.

Which is correct, 300HP or 500HP?  I thought it was 300HP, but perhaps I misunderstood something.

Thanks,  Jim Lindner, Washington County Facilities

Jim,

Thanks for the question.  The law changed about a month ago.  It was 300 Hp.  Now it's 500 Hp.

I've seen many people with 2nd class B or A licenses get "stalled" with that license (they can't move up to 1st class because they can't find a high-pressure job with a 2nd class).  The law was changed to help people with a 2nd class get jobs.

The Special License "take charge" limit was also changed to 50 Hp (it was 30 Hp).  This was done primarily to help commercial laundries comply with the law.

Essentially, the license classification chart is no longer accurate.  All 30 Hp numbers should be changed to 50 Hp and all 300 Hp numbers should be changed to 500 Hp.

We will continue to list the old numbers on this site until the tests change because the tests being given now still ask about the old numbers.

Hope this helps,

Reed
